Characterization of Elastomeric Materials
(Non-Linear Behavior)

The characterization of materials consists in analyzing the physical and mechanical properties of materials through different laboratory tests. Specifically, Soucy Baron has developed an extensive expertise of elastomer characterization.

The rubber mix is previously vulcanized as a specimen to carry out the characterization tests. The analysis of performed tests indicates whether the behaviour of the rubber corresponds to the final product use.

Soucy Baron has mastered the different techniques of elastomeric materials characterization, such as the following:

  • Pure shear
    • Uniaxial tension test with the parallel or tangential method on a specimen
  • Volumetric compression
    • Study of the materials compressibility along a single axis
  • Simple compression
    • Evaluation of the response of a materials under compression stress
  • Biaxial tension
    • Creation of a pure compression state at the center of a specimen
  • Uniaxial tension
    • Tensile stress test on a specimen without lateral stress induction
  • Creep and stress relaxation
    • Uniaxial tensile test followed by the maintenance of the elongation for a relaxation test under stress
      on the specimen

Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

Soucy Baron has the capacity and skills to use the measured characteristics of the material with a non-linear behavior and thus achieve finite element analyses (FEA) with ANSYS software.

The finite element analysis serves to model the mechanical behaviour of products, such as contact forces and deformation. It is possible to calculate high stress areas and suggest improvements to the parts to optimize their behaviour and resistance. In collaboration with the customer, we offer the necessary expertise to maximize the performance of the product according to its application.

Characterization of Products

The product characterization confirms that the modeled mechanical behaviour adequately meets the part requirements. The performance of a product is based on two main criteria, namely the mechanical properties, and durability. The design of anti-vibration parts requires knowledge and precise control of the physical and mechanical properties of materials and products. Soucy Baron has built up over the years an expertise in the characterization of technical parts by the establishment of laboratory tools at the cutting edge of technology.

At the end of the product design cycle is the proof of concept. Beyond the physical and mechanical properties of the product, durability is an important feature to focus on. Our laboratory resources allow us to assess the longevity of your future products.

Our laboratory facilities perform specific analyses for each application, and include the following equipment:

  • Characterization equipment for measuring static, dynamic and damping properties
    • MTS 810 Elastomer Test System
  • Tests of physical performance
    • Adhesion, hardness, rebound, compression, and fatigue
    • Tensile, flexural, torsional and tear strengths
    • Resistance to heat, cold and chemicals (oils and solvents)
    • Resistance to abrasion, ozone and aging (heat and oil)
